SAE J1772 (IEC 62196 Type 1), SAE Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Couple, also known as a J plug, is a North American standard for electrical connectors for electric vehicles maintained by the SAE International.
Lower than 20 kW
Typically 3.3 – 6.6 kW
Bulkier than low power chargers thus taking more space and adding weight to an EV
Higher price of power electronics
Higher than 20 kW
Typically 20 – 100 kW

The Combined Charging System (CCS) is a standard for charging electric vehicles, which uses the Combo1 (CCS1) connectors to provide power. These connectors are extensions of the IEC62196 Type 1 and Type 2 connectors, with two additional direct current (DC) contacts to allow high-power DC fast charging. And the CCS2 mainly use in Europe market and CCS1 mainly use in US market.
Same as Type 1, but with DC pins added
Combined Charging System (CCS)
AC (1-phase) + DC
Power up to 120 kW (600V, 200A)
The IEC 62196 Type 2 connector is used for charging electric cars, mainly within Europe. The connector is circular in shape, with a flattened top edge and originally specified for charging battery electric vehicles at 3–50 kilowatts.
VDE-AR-E 2623-2-2 (German standard)
Complies with IEC 62196
Used in Europe
AC (1-phase or 3-phase)
AC 3 Phase Power up to 43 kW (400V, 63A)
The Combined Charging System (CCS) is a standard for charging electric vehicles, which uses the Combo 2 (CS2) connectors to provide power. These two connectors are extensions of the IEC62196 Type 1 and Type 2 connectors, with two additional direct current (DC) contacts to allow high-power DC fast charging. And the CCS2 mainly use in Europe market.
Same as Type 2, but with DC pins added
AC (1-phase or 3-phase) + DC
DC power up to 200 kW (1000V, 200A)
CHAdeMO first used in the Japanese market, but now it is also easy to find in the European market. And it is currently co-developing with China Electricity Council (CEC) the next-generation CHADEMO 3.0 ultra-high-power charging standard with the working name of “ChaoJi.”
Specified by JEVS (Japanese standard)
Developed by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Nissan, Mitsubishi, Fuji Heavy Industries and Toyota.
Complies with IEC 62196
Used mostly in Japan, but also in Europe and USA
DC Only (Power up to 120 kW (600V, 200A))
The Guobiao standard GB/T 20234 for DC charging within China. And now it is also easy to find in the Asia market, especially the countries near China.
GB/T 20234.3-2011 (DC)
DC (Power up to 187 kW (750V, 250A))
The Guobiao standard GB/T 20234 for AC / DC charging within China. And now it is also easy to find in the Asia market, especially the countries near China.
GB/T 20234.2-2011 (AC)
AC 1 Phase (Power up to 7 kW (220V, 32A))
AC 3 Phase (Power up to 21 kW (400V, 32A))
